Cross-border brands

GEO for Chinese brands going global

In many hardware categories, the brands ChatGPT recommends most were founded in China. Getting there is not automatic: entity confusion, firewalls, JavaScript-only pages and a missing English footprint keep many cross-border brands out of AI answers. This page shows where China-founded brands stand today and what to fix.

China-founded brands in ChatGPT answers

Share of ChatGPT brand mentions held by China-founded brands among each category’s 12 most-mentioned brands (a lower bound). US-English prompts, weekly runs, May 22 – Sep 4, 2026.

Six problems that keep cross-border brands out of AI answers

  1. 1. AI splits or confuses your brand entity

Pinyin names collide with unrelated companies, the Chinese and English names are not linked anywhere, and sub-brands are counted as separate entities. In our own data, "Anker" and "Anker SOLIX" are tracked as two brands in portable power stations, and ECOVACS appears as both "ECOVACS Robotics" and "ECOVACS WINBOT" in robot vacuums — every split dilutes the share the parent brand gets credit for.

    What to do

    • Publish one Organization JSON-LD with the English name, the Chinese name as alternateName, legalName, parent/sub-brand relations and sameAs links (Wikipedia/Wikidata, LinkedIn, Amazon store, official social accounts).
    • Use the same brand spelling everywhere — site, Amazon, retailer listings, press releases.
    • Create or correct the Wikidata item; it feeds the knowledge graphs answer engines cross-check against.

  2. 2. Channel pages matter more than your own site

For shopping prompts, engines often lean on Amazon, Home Depot, Best Buy and review sites rather than the brand site. If those listings carry thin, machine-translated copy or inconsistent specs, that is the version of your product AI repeats.

    What to do

    • Audit the top retailer listings for each hero product: title, bullet points, specs and Q&A should match the official spec sheet.
    • Find which domains AI actually cites for your category before choosing where to invest.

  3. 3. Your firewall blocks AI crawlers

CDN and WAF rules tuned against scrapers often challenge or block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and other AI user agents. robots.txt says "allowed", but the bot gets a 403 or a JavaScript challenge.

    What to do

    • Test each AI user agent against your live site, not just robots.txt.
    • Allow-list the documented AI crawler user agents (and their published IP ranges where offered) in the WAF.

  4. 4. Product pages render only in JavaScript

Many AI crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run JavaScript. Specs, prices and FAQs injected client-side are invisible to them.

    What to do

    • Server-render the product name, key specs, price and FAQ.
    • Publish an llms.txt that points to your most important pages.

  5. 5. Chinese-language content does not reach English answers

Answers to English prompts are built from English sources. Press coverage, founder interviews and spec deep-dives published only in Chinese rarely help the English answer — and 98% of the prompts in our public dataset are US English.

    What to do

    • Publish English originals (not machine translations) of the pages that answer buyer questions: comparisons, specs, warranty, use cases.
    • Earn English-language third-party coverage in the outlets AI cites for your category.

  6. 6. Little English-language community discussion

Reddit threads, forums and long-form reviews supply much of the evidence in commercial answers. Brands whose community lives on Chinese platforms have few English threads for engines to retrieve.

    What to do

    • Support genuine owner communities and expert reviewers in English; do not post fake reviews or astroturf threads.
    • Answer real questions on the forums AI cites for your category, disclosing your affiliation.

How GEOly helps

GEOly measures how ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot mention, rank and cite your brand against competitors, shows which sources those answers rely on, and tracks the attributes AI praises or criticizes — weekly, in English and other markets.

FAQ

Which AI engines should a cross-border brand track?
Start with the engines your buyers use. GEOly tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot; most cross-border consumer brands see the bulk of shopping prompts in ChatGPT and Google’s AI surfaces.
Does a Chinese brand name hurt AI visibility?
The name itself does not; ambiguity does. Problems appear when the pinyin name matches other companies or when the English and Chinese names are never connected. Consistent spelling, Organization structured data and a Wikidata item resolve most of it.
Is optimizing Amazon listings part of GEO?
Yes, when engines cite those listings. Check which domains appear as sources for your category prompts; if retailer pages dominate, their copy and specs are effectively your AI-facing content.
How fast do fixes show up in AI answers?
Crawl and rendering fixes can show up in retrieval-based answers within weeks. Entity and third-party coverage work compounds over a quarter or more. Measure weekly so you can tell which change moved the numbers.
