On 7 and 8 October 2026, OpenAI shipped GPT-6 and its Intelligent UI to paid, Free and Go tiers. Within days, ChatGPT shopping results stopped looking like a row of product cards pinned above the answer and started looking like the answer itself — a numbered list of products written into the body copy, each one carrying its own way to buy.
On 21 October we sat down and measured it. In a signed-out Chrome window we ran 28 shopping prompts, opened 3 shopping side panels, and clicked and logged every one of the 97 buy links those answers produced. This article is what we found.
Key takeaways
- Products moved into the answer body. Clicking a product name now opens a description panel, not a list of merchant quotes.
- The format is set by the prompt, not the category. Our 28 prompts produced 11 distinct display formats.
- Of 97 buy links, 51 opened a retailer's product page and only 20 opened a brand's own product page.
- 96 of 97 links carried
utm_source=chatgpt.com; 17 also carriedutm_medium=feed, meaning the link came from a merchant catalogue rather than a web page. - Sources collapsed to a single site name at the end of each paragraph, with the rest folded behind a tap.
- Three separate things changed in October — the model, the attribution plumbing, and the ad business. Treating them as one "GPT-6 revamp" will lead you to the wrong conclusion.

What actually changed in the answer
Before the revamp, a shopping answer put a horizontal carousel of product cards in the middle of the response. Each card showed an image, a price and a merchant count — "De'Longhi and 9 others" — and clicking it opened a side panel listing every merchant's price next to a Buy button.
When we asked "Recommend three sleep earbuds for a side sleeper in the US." on 21 October, ChatGPT instead wrote a heading — "My top 3 sleep earbuds" — and listed three products inside the answer. Each entry had an image, a label such as "Best overall", a price range, two or three sentences of reasoning, a source marker, and one line reading "Shop at Best Buy". Clicking the product name opened a panel containing that product's image and description. There was no quote list.
That is a bigger change than it looks. The carousel was a shopping widget bolted onto a text answer; the list the text answer. Products are no longer a separate surface you can win or lose independently of the copy. They are the copy.
